PEM Tropics-A Video Tapes

[GTE Logo]

VHS video tapes have been placed in the GTE archive for the PEM Tropics-A mission. The following table indicates the tapes available.

Video cameras were placed aboard each aircraft to monitor surrounding clouds. A camera was placed in the cockpit and was aimed about 45 deg. upward to view clouds in the forward direction. Likewise, cameras were aimed upward and downward from the aircraft to view clouds in the zenith and nadir directions. The zenith view was often of limited value because of sun glint in the wide angle lens. Video cameras were also placed aboard the aircraft to record the scope display of the Weather Radar (DC-8) and the Storm Scope.

Appendix B of the PEM Tropics Expedition Plan provides descriptions of all the video camera installations and the Storm Scope and Weather Radar.

An additional video tape has been provided by Dr. T. N. Krishnamurti since the mission based upon his modeling results. The video provides wind field and rainfall animation over the Pacific at 1000 mb, 850 mb, 500 mb, and 200 mb. Also included are air parcel trajectories for flights 10 (P-3B) at 850 mb, 12 (P-3B) at 500 mb, 13 (P-3B) at 500 mb, 9 (DC-8) at 200 mb, 14 (DC-8) at 300 mb, and 17 (DC-8) at 850 mb.

Two tapes have also been provided by Reginald Newell, one for each aircraft. The tapes provide a summary of cloud images during the mission.

The tapes are available on loan by contacting Don Scott at a.d.scott@larc.nasa.gov Copies may also be requested for retention.
