Meteorological analysis for
TRACE-P at MIT
Y. Zhu and R.E.Newell
The group at MIT (represented by Prof. Newell) will
provide the basic meteorological analysis for the field experiments, using the
61-level ECMWF analysis data and forecasting data up to 72 hours. The datasetsdo
not include the geopotential heights on the pressure levels. The height
coordinate in the cross-sections will be calculated from the
The basic fields we will provide by maps include:
Maps of ECMWF streamlines and wind vectors on 1005hPa,
857hPa, 692hPa, 500hPa,
Maps of ECMWF Ozone on 1005hPa, 500hPa, 288hPa, 113hPa,
96hPa and 80hPa. We may alter the levels when in the field.
Maps of ECMWF specific humidity on 1005hPa, 857hPa,
500hPa and 288hPa.
Maps of ECMWF vertical velocity on 843hPa, 519hPa and
303hPa.
Maps of potential vorticity, pressure and wind vectors on
305K, 315K, 325K, 335K, 345K and 355K.
Maps of divergent wind on 1005hPa and 202hPa.
Maps of streamfunction and rotational wind on 1005hPa and
202hPa.
We may also provide the temperature maps at various
pressure levels, and the mean see level pressure map.
The levels of these maps may be change according to the
requests in the field. We may also
add the analysis for other fields if suggested afterwards. The cross-sections of
zonal wind, meridional wind, relative humidity, temperature, potential vorticity
and potential temperature and ozone along flight tracks will be provided also.
All the figures are in PS format, and about 250mb per day
if only the 24h, 48h and 72 h forcasts are included. Another 80mb may be added
if we provide also the forcasts of 36h and 60h. The maps of mean sea level
pressure, PV and vertical velocity are in color. All the maps will be sent to
www-air.larc.nasa.gov by FTP. The figures may also be sent by FAX if no internet
computer available.
We receive the ECMWF data twice a day. The 00Z data come
at 13:15pm EST, and the 12Z data together with the forecasting data do not
arrive until 17:15pm EST. The maps for 00Z can be completed and sent out around
14:30pm EST, and 12Z analysis maps will be sent out around 19:00pm EST and
forecasting maps will be about 23:00pm EST. David Westberg will collect these
data in the field.
